May 28 Los Altos Hills Foothill College
Two Exciting Astronomy Events in May
You are cordially invited to two astronomy events:
1) Free Public Talk on the Pluto system and Beyond
On Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 7 pm (PST), Dr. Oliver White (SETI Institute) will give a free, illustrated, non-technical lecture entitled:
"Science at the Edge of the Solar System: Uncovering the Secrets of the Pluto System and Arrokoth"
in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College, in Los Altos (see directions below)

The talk is part of the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, now in its 25th year.

Ten years ago the New Horizons spacecraft flew by the Pluto system and revealed an unexpectedly diverse range of landscapes on the dwarf planet and its largest moon Charon, implying complex geological histories for these distant worlds. Dr. White will lead a tour of their often bizarre terrains, some of which are still evolving, and will explain what processes scientists think molded them into their present appearances. After a brief stop at Pluto's four small moons, Dr. White will then extend the tour 2 billion km farther out into space to cover Arrokoth, the tiny planetesimal that New Horizons flew past three and a half years after visiting Pluto.  It is the most primitive object in the Solar System yet visited by a spacecraft.

Dr. Oliver White is a planetary scientist at the SETI Institute. His research focuses on unraveling the geological histories of the planets and moons in our Solar System and learning how their surfaces have evolved. A member of the New Horizons mission team, he is particularly interested in the icy outer Solar System worlds, and has produced a geological map of Pluto to be published by the US Geological Survey.  He is currently creating a similar map of Saturn's moon Tethys.

Foothill College is just off the El Monte Road exit from Freeway 280 in Los Altos.
For directions and parking information, see:
https://foothill.edu/parking/
For a campus map, to find the Smithwick Theater (Bldg. 1000), see:
https://foothill.edu/map/
Note: Parking lot 1 is closest, with access to the theater by stairs.  Parking lot 5 provides access from the same elevation as the theater.

The lecture is co-sponsored by:  * The Foothill College Science, Tech, Engineering & Math Division  * The SETI Institute and * The Astronomical Society of the Pacific

Past lectures in the series can also be found on YouTube at:

2) The 2025 Frank Drake Award Gala

Please join me, other members of the Board, many of the scientists, and other supporters of the SETI Institute at the
The 2025 Frank Drake Award Ceremonies

May 20, 2025, 5:30 – 9:00 pm
at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA;

(or virtually, from 6:30 – 9:00 pm, with special guests and commentary for those joining us on line.) For those coming in person, your ticket includes a cocktail reception, a gala seated dinner, special activities, and a chance to rub elbows with some of the leaders in the search for life in the universe.  Among them will be Institute founder Dr. Jill Tarter; Board member Avery Wang, the key developer of the Shazam music app; science writer Nadia Drake; Apple Senior Vice President, John Giannandrea; SETI scientist Seth Shostak, and many others.

The Drake Award, honoring the Father of SETI, Frank Drake, is the world's premier prize highlighting the science that helps us understand the prevalence of life in the cosmos. This year’s winners are both pioneers in our understanding of how life on Earth began. Dr. David Deamer (U of California, Santa Cruz) has proposed that life may have begun in fresh-water hot-springs and not the oceans, and has suggested a mechanism by which cell membranes might have originated.  Dr. John Baross (U of Washington) is a world leader in our understanding of life in extreme environments and one of the originators of the field of astrobiology.

Past winners of the Drake Award include Nobel Laureate Charles Townes, planet modeler Victoria Meadows, Kepler Mission leader William Borucki, Harvard’s Paul Horowitz, and the late Frank Drake himself.

For more information, and to reserve tickets, go to: https://drakeaward.seti.org/

Free parking will be available at the museum, located at 1401 North Shoreline Boulevard, Mountain View, CA 94043

7 miles or 10Km across SF from BAY to BREAKERS it is precisely for this reason X wickedly expensive parking downtown headache plus the fact that your car may have broken windows upon your return downtown …
I wish to remind people of the more pleasant option of joining in at Panhandle and upper Haight for the most colorful, fun, frolicking, festive activities on the grassy lawns of panhandle, Golden Gate Park and upper Haight afterwards

Oak to Oakland varies year-by-year. Ideal plan park closer to upper Haight Street between Stanyan and Masonic as this will serve you well for nighttime costume party scene on Haight Street best Party of the year on Haight street is after B2B as 1,000 of the 100,000 celebrants pass through (1,000s 2000-2020)

Nudity is not allowed in bars or restaurants on Haight Street. Nude likely to be a gray area regarding sidewalks of Haight Street. also depending on how many hours post event. Therefore support crew with shoes and bikinis. Could be helpful to meet nude runners in Haight
After race to provide clothing, bits, hydration, snacky poos, personal belongings, cell phones, wallets keys etc. back to nekkid participants with fanny packs, etc. that these naked partygoers might enjoy an evermore full evening on the Haight in this incredible costume party.

Poop map SF

My expectation is there will be no problem at all being naked on Haight Street sidewalks mid day, but as hours progress into evening, I promise you there are certain characters on the Haight as darkness falls. You do not want poking and prodding slapping pinching, touching your body as the Haight Street of the 2010 decade let alone 2020 decade is not the same as the Haight of the 2000 decade or any decade last century. In other words, there are unclean characters, not only unhoused. A.k.a. the less housed segments of our gutter punk population, which brings up another point which specifically is this. Walking nude in the Haight is a biohazard vector. You would want sandals, Teva’s, Birkenstocks, flip-flops, Tennies, vans, Converse, or some sort of footwear to walk on sidewalks in the Haight, which are specifically covered with feces and glass. Feces of Canine and human origin will be on every block of every street in the Haight.

Poop map SF

Obviously IMHO nude runners would want to wear protective, footwear for most if not all of the sections of any bay to breakers race and I will attempt to develop this information as I am able. I prefer air or gel OR similar tech running shoes, such as. TBD.

what do SF and granola have in common?
Once you get past the fruits and nuts, all you have left are the flakes.

Easy simple recipe for how to enjoy the festivities in and around upper Haight, SF panhandle and Golden Gate Park, regardless of whether you wish to gravitate towards the

panhandle at 10 AM, 11 AM 12 noon and/or into

Golden Gate Park from 12 noon until afternoon and then into

upper Haight for the entire evening this would be my recipe and was most all of 2000 and 2010 decades

SFPD move folks off Fell st approx 12 noon drunks can then stumble into panhandle to touch grass blow bubbles hula hoop frisbee Hackensack picnic like a little Burningman or festival

One cannot simply conceive of 100,000 happy fun costume, sexy freaks weirdos and fools running through Golden Gate Park mostly in their 20s

The mass of these hundred thousand people flow through these 3 three sectors in this order so you might plan accordingly many of the partygoers get hung up at Spreckles Lake on 30th Ave., @ Fulton SF Golden Gate Park where they can take photos have a snack puke their brains out or worry about why they did not back up their iPhone before they lost it in their drunken stupor see also: dude where’s my car?

Lots of folks then will get on the bus at 30th and Fulton to head back east then tens or 20s of thousands of these people will migrate like Buffalo back eastward through Golden Gate Park wether from Ocean Beach and or from Spreckles Lake 30th Ave and or from whatever grassy lawn, they puked on

Then tens of thousands of people potentially will pass back through the panhandle and through upper Haight, which will be thousands of people all night long quite the scene so if you ever thought you might enjoy going to the upper Haight this specifically is the one day out of the year of 365 days That upper Haight is a serious Mardi Gras carnival with costume atmosphere

Haight Street fair Sun Sept 7
is nothing spectacular. It’s just a street fair and there are not really very many costumes so the evening of
Haight Street fair Sun Sept 7
is just mediocre or second best night and it can never ever hold a candle to upper Haight at night after Bay to breakers May 18 :)
